History of the DSA
The DSA was formed in November 2005 by a group of disabled people who enjoy seagoing sailing. During 2006 we sailed in a 20 ft Felicity called Moonshine making over 60 disabled sailings in our first season. We became a registered charity in March 2006 The DSA were awarded a grant of £5,000 from the Big Lottery Fund Awards for All scheme which paid for life jackets, safety equipment, moorings and a Disability Awareness training course. The demand from disabled people to experience the thrill and freedom of sailing has grown. In 2007 we purchased a secondhand Westerly Centaur called Sante Foy. She is 26 feet in length and has room to take six people at a time. Sainte Foy was adapted to help non-ambulant people by fitting gates to make access easier. In November 2007 DSA won the Big Lottery Fund Peoples Millions competition run by ITV. The money has allowed us to buy a brand new Hanse 350 and to adapt her for wheelchair users as well as our other beneficiaries. She will be ready for sea trials in June 2008 and will be commissioned in September.
A local charity group, Seeing, regularly sponsors the DSA with running costs. The DSA motto is “Affordable sailing for the disabled” so that everyone can become part of this exciting experience.
DSA volunteers must attend a Disability Awareness training course and have CRB clearance to work with children and vulnerable adults. Our skippers are all RYA-qualified or approved. All our boats are equipped with life jackets, wet weather gear and safety equipment to coastguard standards. The wearing of trainers/flat shoes is essential. We request that people bring their own food and drink if we are sailing near mealtimes. The DSA encouraged the inclusion of family members so that they are not left out of the experience. Those wishing to sail with DSA do not have to join as members.
Membership of DSA is £15 per annum and this allows members to have a say in the running of the organisation. There is a thriving “Friends” club of people all round the country. They receive newsletters and updates for a donation of £10 per annum.
