BECOMING A CREW MEMBER
WHAT TRAINING IS AVAILABLE?
As new crew the skippers will look to develop your skills and experience on each sailing trip when possible, and introduce you to the DSA procedures. The main sailing 'season' with our disabled members on board is April to October, the winter months are prioritised for crew training and this is an ideal time to develop and build your sailing.
The DSA is itself an RYA Recognised Training Centre running a wide range of RYA courses. Please note all sailing is dependent on the weather and may have to be cancelled at short notice.
WHERE DOES THE DSA SAIL?
Usually our sailing trips are days sails in and around Torbay. We also arrange longer trips with overnight stays in local ports. The DSA has also taken members to the Channel Islands and regularly takes part in the Annual Eddystone Challenge Pursuit race and other charity events.
WHAT BOATS DOES THE DSA SAIL?
The DSA currently has TWO Class 'A' ocean going yachts. Our newest boat, 'DSA Free Spirit ', is a Bavaria C38 and our other boat, “DSA Freedom”, is a 38ft Beneteau 'Oceanis'. Both are suitably modified to assist people with disabilities and all safety equipment is provided.
HOW DO I JOIN?
On receipt of the completed 'Interest' form you will be added to our waiting list When a place becomes available a member of our training team will telephone you and arrange an informal chat.
Following this you may be invited for two initial ‘Induction Sails’ with our experienced training skippers to make sure you will suit the DSA and the DSA will suit you.
After your induction sails is successful, you will be invited to join the DSA either as a 'Crew' or as a ' 'TraineeCrew' member.
You will need to have completed a DSA membership form and will need to be DBS checked by ourselves. [See below]

WHAT IS A DBS CHECK?
Once you have become a crew member we will need you to undertake a to be DBS check.
This is a legal requirement because you will be sailing with children and/or vunerable adults
