MANY NEW MEMBERS IN 2023 SEASON!

The Disabled Sailing Association was pleased to welcome eighty-four new members with disabilities who have joined us over the last season.
As well as these individuals, the DSA also welcomed members from associated specialist groups such as Orchard Manor School, (Totnes), and the ‘Oceans of Hope’ charity who support MS  sufferers from all over the world to experience the joys of sailing.
More details of these groups can be found on the links below!
ORCHARD MANOR SCHOOL TRIPS

The DSA began working with Orchard Manor School in 2023. We managed six half-day sessions with a total of 25 youngsters able to experience the joy and pleasure of sailing around the the bay.

” Orchard Manor School is a Specialist School with an outstanding residential provision that caters for nearly 200 students aged 3-19. We provide education and care for pupils with communication and interaction difficulties, Autistic spectrum conditions and learning needs. Pupils attend as day pupils or residentially from Monday to Friday.”

Below are a couple of quotes and pictures from some of those who came sailing with us:

Year 10 enjoyed a fantastic days sailing in ideal weather conditions.  Some turned out to be born sailors as they steered the yachts around Torbay. A comment from one pupil summed it up when he said he had ‘the best day ever!”  (teacher)

Hayden said he had the most amazing time, he absolutely loved it, Thank-you! (parent)

OCEANS OF HOPE

The DSA started working  with the ‘Oceans of Hope’ charity on their “Challenge Events”  in the summer of 2023. We arranged six half-day sessions with a total of 25 youngsters able to experience the joy and pleasure of sailing around the the bay, despite the limitations of the weather at that time!

They all seem to enjoy their day and we hope we gave them a real taste of the joys of sailing and that they will come and sail with us again!

A quote from their web-page:

Oceans of Hope –  Challenge Events

Our challenges are open to all with Multiple Scherosis regardless of experience or ability. Our aim is to help you gain self-confidence and a renewed sense of empowerment. The camaraderie of sailing a boat with people who have similar experiences creates an environment where people can comfortably share their hopes and fears. Below is a quote from one of the trips:

Had a great day out with the ‘Oceans of Hope” group.

Both boats sailed to St amarys Bay where they anchored for lunch.

We are hoping to host other members of this later this year, we look forward to welcoming them back!
